USP 800 Architectural Design Considerations for New Pharmacies

In an article on the website usp800.guru, pharmacy architects Bernstein & Associates, Architects advocate planning for the future implementation of USP 800 in current pharmacy design.

Some highlights from the article:

Starting with all new pharmacy projects in 2015, Bernstein & Associates, Architects will be planning all new pharmacies to be easily convertible to USP 800 compliant in the future with minimal to no interruption to ongoing pharmacy operations if/when USP 800 is codified.

The idea, says principal William N. Bernstein, LEED®AP, AIA, will be to design the space and the infrastructure to allow this conversion in the future with some work, but designed in a manner that the work will be self-contained to a designated area of the pharmacy that is already cordoned off from the rest of the pharmacy.

This strategy has already been utilized successfully on a new USP 797 compliant pharmacy the firm is designing.

By taking USP 800 guidelines into account during the current architectural design, Bernstein & Associates, Architects provides maximum flexibility, minimum upfront cost, and minimal to no future interruption to the pharmacy if/when USP 800 guidelines are implemented.
