Emergency Department Design Feasibility Study

Bernstein & Associates, Architects recently completed an emergency department design feasibility study for a hospital in New York.

The emergency department is a key aspect of the functioning of a modern hospital. It accounts for a large percentage of admissions, and is integrated with all of the departments in the hospital. These facilities can have huge swings in patient population, and despite earlier predictions, ER visits continue to rise.

Common goals in any ER renovation, including this one, will be: reduce wait time, reduce percentage of patients who leave without having been seen, increase patient and staff safety and comfort, and use technology effectively in making this department in providing more efficient and better care.

Scope of work envisioned in this feasibility study includes: general construction, demolition, concrete, millwork, windows/glass,doors & hardware, drywall/ceilings, ceramic tile, flooring, painting, specialties, window treatments, fire protection, plumbing, hvac, and electrical.

The consulting work was well received by our hospital client.

CPEP Design Feasibility Study

Bernstein & Associates, Architects recently completed a CPEP design feasibility study for a hospital in New York.

CPEP stands for Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, and is a specific type of psychiatric ER program which is licensed by the NYS Office of Mental Health.

In creating the CPEP program, OMH had the following objectives: “timely triage, assessments, and interventions; controlling inpatient admissions; providing crisis intervention in the community; and providing linkages to other services.”

The CPEP program has succeeded, per OMH, in “alleviating overcrowding in general medical emergency rooms, providing alternatives to inpatient admissions, and serving individuals in crisis in their own communities.”

The CPEP program involves four concepts, as promulgated by OMH:
- “Hospital-based crisis intervention services in the emergency room, including triage, referral, and psychiatric and medical evaluations and assessments”
- “Extended observation beds in the hospital to provide for extended evaluation, assessment, or stabilization of acute psychiatric symptoms for up to 72 hours”
- “Crisis outreach services in the community, including clinical assessment and crisis intervention treatment”
- “Crisis residence services in the community for temporary residential and other necessary support services for up to five consecutive days.”

Also per OMH, “a major objective of the CPEP is to provide psychiatric emergency care recipients with timely services …more rapid triage and assessment that would decrease overcrowding and reduce long waiting times”
